Spirit, and it must so continue with patience and persistence. “In the Spirit” could also be rendered “by the Spirit.” The Greek grammatical construction (dative case) may indicate either location or agency. Bruce (Galatians 243) suggests that agency is the meaning; he translates, “walk by the Spirit,” meaning “let your conduct be regulated by the Spirit.” Rendall, with a similar approach, paraphrases, “Regulate your lives by the rule of the Spirit” (186). Brown presents a contrary view. In his opinion,
